The 69 year old Dawn Wells was coming home from her birthday party! What a drag! Can you believe they busted her on her birthday? It’s ok Dawn … 40 years ago you could have gotten out of that deal. But now … maybe …. not so much.

Of course her story to the cop was right out of a Hollywood script.

I picked up these three hitchikers and they started to smoke something … so I put them out.

It was a good story Mary Ann, but your mug shot looks a little tweaky.

I do love signs. I spend a lot of times reading signs and making signs. Signs are good.

By the way, we start with a little contract today with a dealership installing signs on FEDex trucks. A pretty good deal. FedEX corporate supplies the materials and we just put them on. I might put up our first one tomorrow on the blog.

Do yourself a favor. Go to college. There’s more weed there.

You might want to go over and read some of their stuff. I haven’t read it all … but a cursory view gets my nod. For whatever that is worth to anyone.

I found this old article from “out of ur” this morning with the topic … Pimping Jesus: consumerism and the red-light gospel. A two thumbs up article. Sorry about not mentioning the authors name … could not find it on the article. It’s a must read.

A quote from the article:
“Say this prayer and you’ll be saved.” He may continue to live in hell, but at least he won’t die in hell. He can’t believe it’s so simple. He can’t believe it’s so quick. He jumps at the opportunity. He says the prayer/incantation and walks out thinking his life is transformed. Wham bam, thank you ma’am, he’s done. Everyone feels better. He’s finally gotten his big break, and you’ve just brought another one into the Kingdom. Or have you? What if you just sold him a false gospel? What if the reason he couldn’t believe it was so simple and quick was because it’s not? What if you just pimped out Jesus, a false Jesus that you brought out to provide a quick answer?

This guy is tracking. Over the years of being a pastor … I confess that I have had my share of “wham, bam thank you maam” moments that I mis-represented the love of God, the relationship of Christ, and the true nature of what the church is suppose to be. There … I’ve confessed it again. It’s not my first and won’t be my last. I know that I “pimped a Jesus” that was not historical or true to His divine nature.

Why did I do it? Why do pastors, leaders, and others continue to do it? It satisfies an immediate gratification. It is so easy to listen to someone’s whacked out life … and pass it through to … well, you just need to get saved! I mainly did it because of time. It is a whole lot easier to give someone an easy fix than it is to walk with them, love them, and help them through their junk. Can you imagine sharing your deepest hurt with your pastor, exposing the most sensitive areas of your life only to have him tell you that you have been dealing with this issue way too long … therefore you must NOT be saved. Run from these guys … they are pimpin a consumer Jesus.

Scripture is full of the comparison of prostitution to real relationship. Prostitutes provide a service for money to meet an immediate need of gratification. It is a semblance of relationship that everyone craves. Bible language can be so colorful when it describes Israel as a people “whoring after other gods”.

You can get a quick prayer and a hearty “Amen”. You can get a slap on the head and fall out. You can get a weekly meeting of others just as hungry as yourself.

Me, I’m living in the moment of real life relationships and holding to faith. Reality: there are no quick solutions to living. There is no “quick prayer” to salvation. Why do you think Paul would say … “work out your own salvation in fear and trembling”. I believe in Christ … He is my understanding of a Living God. Just because you don’t believe that … doesn’t isolate you from me. That’s the real gospel. It’s suppose to be “good news”.

blessed are the poor in spirit

cowboys lost to giants

All that went on yesterday, deciding to go to church, church, lunch, cowboys game … it all rang in my head. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they shall inherit the kingdom of God. First off, to correct errant theology … this is not talking about poor in finances or the homeless. If you look throughout the web … you will see well meaners … miss the point of this first shot in Jesus’ message on the mount.

You can be “bankrupt in spirit” and still have money, fame, career, etc. Being “poor in spirit” is a choice … not a circumstance. I had this dream last night. Really. In this dream, I was with a bunch of preachers … some I knew … some I didn’t. We were in this dilemma. Now this probably came from the fact that I did eat some weird stuff before I went to bed … but, nevertheless … I continue. We were in this large room that we noticed was closing in on us … minute by minute the walls would move. In the room with us was this broken down old house that was literally falling apart. The more famous of the preacherly types began to say … “let’s stack up the broken stuff and try and get on the roof” … “it’s the only way that we will survive”. So, we began to break off stuff that we didn’t need and stuff off of the structure that was already torn up. We began to stack it. As the walls began to close in … we kept building taller. I kept thinking … what happens when we all get to the top and there is no where else to go? Oh well, maybe Jerry Clowers helicopter story can insert here. As I stacked stuff … I began to notice an upstairs exterior window to the house. I began to think … if there are steps in that house to get higher … then there are steps to go lower.

I convinced a couple of “no name” guys to go with me through the window. The majority were very busy and doing a great job of building ramps, ladders, foot holds … it was great looking. My way, not so good, it was broken up, over looked, and we could not really see where it lead. I just kept thinking … go low and you can go under the wall. Well, in my dream, I got out … alone. The other two guys quit and said … it’s not going to work … they climbed back out on the roof … the walls crushed in … everyone else died when “no help” arrived.

I made it. I didn’t feel good … because no one else made it.

Jump cut: back to reality.

Being poor in spirit … a choice … gives you the keys to the kingdom. HINT: not a lot of people want to choose a “bankrupt spirit”. After all, let’s all be joyful and run a muck in happiness. If you are a visionary … the door is not found in the majority of ideas. It is found in the only idea.

Lori and I had a great evening last night. We found this group of folks who ride motorcycles in The Colony area. We met them at meetup.com … that’s a cool site in itself. We met at the Home Depot in The Colony @ 7 pm last night and rode over to Frisco at the “Down Under Pub” … there were about 20 of us at dinner … only 7 bikes made it out on the cool evening. It was really fun.

We have not done much of this stuff, mainly because of our experience with church. You get invited out to some church gathering and freak out because basically no one speaks to you except the designated greeter or host. Then you are pretty much left alone.

Not the case last night … every person introduced themselves and most all of the ladies made a special effort to sit and talk to Lori … which made me feel good too. We would definitely go back.

It does remind me of this deal that happened to us a few months back. We visited a church in Pilot Point for a few Sunday’s … a lady kept coming to us and telling us how glad she was that we were attending … invited us to Sunday School (not my fav) … but we went once. Then they were having this social event. The lady and her husband called us several times to invite us … blah, blah, blah. So, we decided to attend. We walk up to this ESTATE and ring the door bell … greeted by this blank stared hostess … her first words … “oh, you must be the visitors” She yammers on about how the people who invited us both got sick and they would not be attending. Then she escorted to the back deck and turned us out. Now, if you are not familiar with the term … “turned out” … let me explain. If you have horses and they stay in stalls part of the day … you “turn them out” once a day to get some exercise. You basically, lead them to the gate, open up, take off their halter, and slap them on the butt to enjoy their “turn out” for the day. You, the horse owner, are now through with your obligation until time to “catch them up” for the evening. This is pretty much how it happened … she “turned us out” to the deck, closed the door behind her and went on preparing … whatever she was doing.

On the deck were about 30-40 people … none of which even twitched an eye our way. We sat down. Very awkward. About 10 minutes went by … until someone came over and said something. Honestly, I was just trying to find a way out without making a big scene. Finally, the staff of the church arrived … (the hired people people) … the pastor pretty much sized up the situation when he got there and spent the rest of the evening stuck on us. We actually told him that no one spoke to us. He said, “you know how people are.”

Fortunately, that’s just how “church people” are. I have found that normal, well adjusted folk talk to even strangers for the first time with care and concern.
